Following the Grenfell tragedy and subsequent recommendations by Dame Judith Hackitt in her 'Building a Safer Future' report, the construction industry have started to respond, offering potential solutions to improve fire safety design and regulations.
 
Key criticisms in the report are:
<OL>
<LI>
The roles and responsibilities of those procuring, designing, constructing and maintaining buildings are unclear;
</LI>
<LI>
The package of regulations and guidance (in the form of Approved Documents) can be ambiguous and inconsistent;
</LI>
<LI>
The processes that drive compliance with building safety requirements are weak and complex with record-keeping and change management ranging from poor to non-existent;
</LI>
<LI>
Competence across the system is patchy;
</LI>
<LI>
The product testing, labelling and marketing regime is opaque and insufficient; and
</LI>
<LI>
The voice of residents often goes unheard, even when safety issues are identified
</LI>
</OL>
 
Key recommendations:
<OL>
<LI>
A series of robust gateway points to strengthen regulatory oversight
</LI>
<LI>
A stronger change control process
</LI>
<LI>
A single, more streamlined route to oversee building standards
</LI>
<LI>
There should be a consistent labelling and traceability system for construction products
</LI>
<LI>
A digital standard of record-keeping for the design, construction and during the occupation of HRRBs, which will include any subsequent refurbishments within those buildings.
</LI>
<LI>
Better oversight on building safety through implementation of four "key information products". These are: (a) the digital record; (b) the fire and emergency file; (c) full plans and (d) the construction control plan. The creation, maintenance and handover of relevant information should be an "integral part" of the legal responsibilities of clients, principal designers, and principal contractors undertaking works on HRRBs.

Commitment to renew assessment annually and after major repair.
</LI>
<LI>
Review and update evacuation policy and communicate clearly the policy to residents.
</LI>
<LI>
There should be three "gateway" points where those responsible for a building's safety will have to prove to the new JCA that they are complying with regulations.
</LI>
<LI>
The construction sector and fire safety sector will have to demonstrate more effective leadership for ensuring building safety among key roles including an overarching body to provide oversight of competence requirements
</LI>
</OL>
 
 
The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Association for Project Safety (APS) are teaming up to run a series of ‘construction technology’ (#contech) workshops to explore the use of new technology integrations to develop much needed market solutions to known fire safety issues. 
 
The workshops will require engagement from November 2018 to March 2019. Engagement can be as much or as little as the team are able to commit.
We are calling for a mix of industry experts, building owners, tech start-ups, coders and developers to register interest for the following programme:

A collaboration based workshop to finalise proposed solutions and presentations. @ IET, Savoy Place, London.

Presentations will be to a panel of industry experts, innovators and funders / investors with the aim to develop the winning idea into a ‘market-ready’ solution or product
