Corporates are seeking ever greater transparency from their supply chains and more control over the ESG performance within them. Given this and scope 3 targets becoming a key focus for corporates, much of the investment and innovation needed will be in supply chains.

Research by BCG and HSBC indicates that supply chains need US$100trn of investment to decarbonise – with c50% going to SMEs. Common themes from this research suggested that of the corporates contacted:

The vast majority are currently or planning to invest in supply chain sustainability.
Over half of all organisations have implemented environmental policies across their supply chains, while over a third have put in place health and wellbeing policies.
Two thirds of corporates are asking new suppliers to conform to their sustainable requirements as part of their onboarding process.
Over half are mandating current suppliers to comply with their sustainability policies in order to transact.

It is imperative that businesses prepare themselves for the ever-changing ESG landscape, mitigating potential risk as a minimum and potentially giving themselves a competitive advantage within the market.
