From the people who brought you previous #BuildTheBBC events across London, Salford and Glasgow, comes an evening of lightening talks focussed on our teams here in Glasgow! This is a great opportunity for individual’s interested in learning more about the work we create for the BBC from our amazing Pacific Quay office and the challenges our design &amp; engineering department face.
 
The evening will consist of talks from our Design + Engineering teams here in Glasgow along with food/refreshments and the chance to network. 
 
You'll hear from Platform, Voice+AI, and Education. 
 
Voice+AI are the new frontier in interaction with internet services. From Alexa to Siri, Google Assistant to Cortana, the way we interact with the internet is changing, and fast. Assistants are rapidly becoming a part of everyday life for millions of our consumers and are now the fastest growing medium for interaction with the internet across the country. Our mission within the newly formed BBC Voice+AI team is to shape interaction with the BBC at both an audience and organisational level through these assistants, and pioneer new formats and technology that bring the BBC to life in an artificial intelligence first world. It’s exciting stuff.
 
Lightning talks – Voice + AI
"Introduction to the Voice + AI team" – Andrew Webb, Head of Product, will be talking about why the BBC is creating a Voice + AI team and the opportunities it hopes to exploit.
"Voice first formats" – James Fletcher, Assistant Editor, will explain the intricacies of developing new content and interactive formats in a Voice-First world.
“Designing for Voice” – Speaker TBC, covering the challenges around designing experiences without screens.
“Talking to Machines” – Matthew Gamble, Principal Engineer, will be talking about how the BBC has been pioneering conversational experiences for Smart Speakers and Voice Assistants.
 
Platform
The BBC has one of the largest broadcast archives in the world, with everything from Churchill’s wartime broadcasts to the latest Blue Planet programmes. We plan to make more of our archive content available as the BBC approaches its 100th birthday!

“From the other side” Paul Burt, our newest software engineering team lead talks about our search product and what his first two months working in the BBC have been like.
Education - In BBC Education we help change the lives of millions of people by delivering world-class learning experiences via Bitesize and BBC Food.  Our vision is to unlock learning potential in everything the BBC does and make learning feel effortless, through connected services built around world-class BBC content.

Learning with AR and VR
Jonathan Halkett (@jopshawkhead), Software Engineer, BBC Education
A multidisciplinary team from BBC Education has been exploring the potential of new technological capabilities like Augmented and Virtual Reality. Jonathan will share how we're building cross platform experiences for XR and what we learned when we showed our prototypes to students.
20th Anniversary Bitesize
Stuart Brown (@stuartmemo), Software Engineering Team Lead, BBC Education
To celebrate Bitesize's 20th birthday we decided to give the old thing a new lick of paint. But how did we change thousands of pages viewed by millions of users seemingly overnight? The mystery is revealed! Live!
Doors open at 17.30 with talks starting promptly at 18.30. Food and refreshments will be served throughout the evening.
