Bureaucratic Capture: Revolutionary & Counter-Revolutionary Urbanism in Rojava

During periods of political turbulence and emancipatory potential, the interaction between spatial justice and bureaucracy is crucial but overlooked. Bureaucratic Capture brings policy-writers, legal scholars, municipal workers, activists and campaigners together to explore and develop spatial planning from below. Nowhere are these issues more present and pertinent than the region of Rojava, whose self-declared stateless, feminist revolution has built an alternative political, paradigm despitethe most hostile of environmental conditions. Today, Rojava faces global geopolitical abandonment and bureaucratic subsumption into a New Syria. Together we will look at the urban dimensions of the Rojava project over the past decade: what have been its gains, what are its main threats, what we can learn from, and how can we defend, protect and proliferate Rojava’s ongoing commitments to spatial justice? In this urgent and important event, we welcome two key figures of the Rojava Revolution. Berivan Omar is the Co-Mayor of Qamishlo Municipality in the Autonomous Administration of Rojava, North-East Syria. She is an agricultural engineer and teaches ecology at the University of Rojava. Her work focusses on political ecology, environmental sustainability and loval governance. Elmaz Romî is the recently-appointed Mayor of Kobanê, following protests against the New Syrian government's appointments across Rojava. Originally a teacher, she has been Co-Chair of the Ecology Committee, Vice Chair of the Women's Council, and undertaken various coordination and diplomatic roles. Location: Stevens 108 &amp; ONLINE.
