• how to check whether your ideas are viable

• where to source funding

• how to develop a business model

• choosing a legal status

• common legal considerations e.g. licences, health and safety, terms and conditions, insurance, data protection and intellectual property

About your trainer


Emma Smith is a SFEDI accredited business adviser who lives in Bristol and has real world experience of being in business. She specialises in supporting start-ups and those in their early years of trading. Since 2007, she has assisted hundreds of people across the city, from all sorts of backgrounds and industries, to start and run their ventures.


Workshops are free for all aspiring entrepreneurs, start ups, and small businesses in the West of England Combined Authority region. All events are funded by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority through the UKSPF.

Will there be refreshments?

Tea and instant coffee will be provided in the meeting room. Bristol Central Library has a cafe with a range of other refreshments for purchase.


What is your refund policy?

BIPC Bristol events are free, but places are limited and events can be oversubscribed. If you no longer wish to attend the session, when possible please give two working days’ notice by email or cancel on Eventbrite.


Can I attend if I am not a member of the library?

Any Bristol-based business or person with a business idea is welcome, but we always recommend joining the library as it is free and makes our business databases, books, and e-books easy for you to access.
