Introduction to Calligraphy

Organised by Van Gogh House London, the Festival of ENCOUNTERS is a free-to-attend, large-scale event, featuring up to 40 talks and other kinds of encounters, by artists, writers, activists, musicians and thinkers in venues across the northern end of Brixton. This includes not only Van Gogh House, but also galleries, parks and community centres and other exciting venues including non-traditional spaces such as cafes, and a co-op workshop space. The Festival is inspired by serendipitous encounters with interesting people in unexpected places, bringing together exciting voices, thoughts and ideas to and from Brixton.Van Gogh House London is very grateful to Lambeth Council for their support in helping us bring this inaugural Festival of ENCOUNTERS to fruition.

Have you always wanted to learn calligraphy? Have some kit but not sure where to start?This is your chance to learn calligraphy with illustrator and calligrapher Polly Crossman in an online creative class, via Zoom. You&#x27;ll receive a delivery of a calligraphy kit, including everything you&#x27;ll need to get going:<ul><li>One of Polly&#x27;s favourite nibs, prepped and ready to rock</li><li>A wooden pen holder</li><li>A pot of Polly&#x27;s favourite ink</li><li>Practice paper</li><li>A letter guide sheet </li></ul>Everyone is welcome.You’ll receive:<ul><li>Two hours of calligraphy tuition, guiding you through the basic principles of calligraphy and the different strokes, through to letter forms and forming words</li><li>A PDF class booklet with written guidance - sent by email in plenty of time before the start of the class - and can be used for guidance in the future too!</li></ul>Please note that ticket sales end on 15 April, so that we can make sure we post your kit to you in time. Please make sure you enter your postal address at the checkout.The class will be hosted via Zoom and you will receive an invitation to the class in advance by email. You’ll need to have access to Zoom on a laptop, iPad or your phone. We’d recommend the bigger the screen the better so you can see Polly well.A few notes:<ul><li>Please leave a note in the box at checkout to indicate the name you would like written on the personalised name tag - otherwise this will read as per the name on the shipping address (i.e. if it&#x27;s a gift, please tell us)</li></ul><ul><li>If you are buying a class as a gift, please also leave an email contact in the box at checkout so that we can make contact ahead of the class. A link for the workshop will be sent to participants prior to the event.</li><li>Ticket sales for this event will end Thursday 15 April to allow time for the delivery of workshop materials.</li></ul>About Polly CrossmanPolly Crossman is an illustrator and calligrapher based in London. Her calligraphy finds its way onto bespoke stationery, invitations, and partnerships with clients that include Smythson. She has been practising calligraphy for over five years, and has spent the last three years teaching calligraphy to plenty of willing students in London and, more recently, online. He was working at the art dealers Goupil and Cie in Covent Garden.
