The Call

Since 2012, British-Iranian performance artist Sara Zaltash has been offering, singing and teaching the Call, an adaptation of the Islamic call-to-prayer (azan/adhan) in unusual contexts for performance, art, festival, religious and secular communities. She translates “Allah” as “Oneness” and teaches that “Oneness is Greatest” and that “there is no god greater than Oneness.” Neither art nor religion, Sara’s Call is adored as a transformational portal to the unified divine energy of all beings. Sara has been invited to offer the Call at the private view of the exhibition.

Testimonials

“The first time I heard her sing the Call, I had goosebumps all over and could feel the magic rustling and reverberating in the leaves of the trees all around, in the splashing of the river we were standing next to, in the chirping of the dawn chorus of birds.

I have heard her perform it many time since and she never fails to bring her full being and devotion to the Call. Rarely have I met such a committed soul, getting up at dawn every day to call, no matter whether there are 20 people to call with her, or just one. She is filled to the brim with motivation to touch people's hearts and ignite in them their own longing to come home.”

“She teaches, sings and offers this Call in service of Oneness, to overpower the negative incarnations of Islam with pure limitless love pouring from her fearless female form, and to contribute towards an ultimate and lasting peace in the Middle East.”

“courageous, graceful, provocative and left me smiling at the audacity of it on so many cultural levels. I believe it to have been a deep expression of connection to the divine through song and prayer. I saw reverence in her eyes for what she described as the oneness, as she moved around the circle. I recognised and understood the fears and objections of some in the audience, and their willingness to be honest about it, but for me transgression of accepted norms of behaviour in all parts of the world at this time is also valuable in breaking down coercive and destructive cultural conditioning. I believe this is happening in the people's movements arising often spontaneously around the world. Such transgression is central to a collective human striving for a spirituality which is not mediated by church or state.”
