Can Science Explain Everything?

Can Science Explain Everything?

Mexborough Church HallMexborough, England
Thursday, Feb 26 from 7:30 pm to 10 pm GMT
Overview

A talk by Ard Lewis, professor of theoretical physics at the University of Oxford.

Science is arguably the most successful endeavour human beings have ever engaged in, transforming our lives through applications in medicine and technology, and transforming our imaginations by insights into the natural world. It fills us with awe and wonder. But beyond its triumphs lies a deep question: can the same method that measures the stars also measure the meaning of our lives? Can science tell us why we are here, or how we should live? Or is its power defined not only by what it explains, but by what it leaves untouched?

Ard Louis is professor of theoretical physicist at the University of Oxford. He hasa broad interdisciplinary set of interests, including self-assembling DNA, theories of evolution, the dynamics of soft matter, machine learning and applications of algorithmic information theory. He happily collaborates with biologists, chemists, computer scientists, mathematicians, philosophers and theologians. In 2013 he was elected a member of the International Society for Science and Religion. With David Malone he made the 4-part documentary Why Are We Here[11] for Tern TV.He also appeared in the episode Proof of God in the series The Story of God with Morgan Freeman.
