CAnceR Experience: approaches to capturing patient experience of cancer care

This is a collaborative event between Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, CLAHRC YH and SIRON (Sheffield Innovation and Research in Oncology)

“The experience of cancer care is by definition subjective and efforts to improve the quality of care must start from patients’ and carers’ own experiences” (NCAT 2010)

"A powerful play, following five women diagnosed with breast cancer who find friendship, camaraderie and support online, followed by an open discussion led by Professor Peter Bath from the University of Sheffield."

Patient and carer experiences are fundamental measures of the quality and effectiveness of cancer services. In recent years a diverse range of approaches to involving patients and carers in evaluating and improving services have developed. This inaugural National conference provides opportunities to share knowledge and innovation in

  • Creative approaches to patient engagement

  • Measuring patient experience: PROMS/PREMS

  • Involving patients in developing services

  • Capturing patient experience: research methods and approaches

10:00 - Plenary: Dr Karen Roberts, Chief Nurse and AHP for Macmillan Cancer Support

"Understanding the different times of need after a cancer diagnosis - aspiring for excellence in care delivery"

10:35 - 12:10 - Concurrent sessions topics include:

  • The experiences of melanoma patients and their carers

  • Going home after treatment for malignant spinal cord compression

  • Long term follow up and lymphoma

  • Lung cancer patients and Recovery Care Packages

  • Using film to develop a peer support intervention

12:15 - 13:10 - Lunch and poster viewing

13:10 - Plenary: Professor Roma Maguire, University of Strathclyde

"Using innovations in digital health to optimise symptom management in patients with cancer"

13:45 - 15:10 - Concurrent session topics include (with a coffee break at 14:25):

  • Support with empathy in an online health forum for breast cancer

  • Receiving a diagnosis of mesothelioma

  • Women's experiences of high dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplant

  • Exploring the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial of pre-habilitation

  • Capturing patient experience data from social media
