Interested in Cantonese opera? Join us in an exploration of this artform from the Backstage to the Stage.

As part of our Lunar New Year celebrations, join us to discover what it takes to put on a Cantonese opera performance. If you are interested in watching Cantonese opera, you first need to understand the inspiration and philosophy behind it.Discover and witness detailed preparations, including applying the signature Chinese opera makeup, doing the hair and putting on the costumes. Learn about  character roles and stage techniques. We talk to Rosa Cheng Principle Performer &amp; Artistic Director of Vancouver Cantonese Opera to get the low down on this unique artform which is included in Unesco&#x27;s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. We will also discuss traditional celebration for Lunar New Year.This talk will be hosted through Zoom and have a Q&amp;A at the end of the session. Rosa Cheng PRINCIPAL PERFORMER &amp; ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Vancouver Cantonese Opera.Rosa is a talented Cantonese opera performer who offers a versatility and diversity of styles in her singing and acting. Her career as a Cantonese opera artist started in 1993 and founded the Vancouver Cantonese Opera Company in 2000. She has since performed in principal female role in over 50 Cantonese opera repertoires. She takes every opportunity to refine and deepen her interpretation with every repertoire. She is also an excellent teacher in Cantonese opera technique and singing. She dedicates herself in the preservation and promotion of Cantonese opera in Canada.Rosa designed a range of outreach programs which includes regular classes in singing, performance techniques, and make-up. Her students, past and present, numbered over a hundred. She is a well- respected teacher in Cantonese opera techniques and singing.
