Event description
This workshop introduces homeowners and tradespeople to the guiding principles behind sympathetic maintenance and repair of old houses

About this event

This one-day workshop introduces homeowners and tradespeople to the guiding principles behind sympathetic maintenance and repair of traditional buildings. A traditional building is any building/home, regardless of size, built before 1919, using techniques and material such as solid walls and lime mortars, lime plasters and timber windows.

The days will start with a general introduction to the ‘anatomy’ of a traditionally built house and then discuss the philosophy behind maintenance and repair. We will use Calverley Old Hall as a case study, taking a tour to different parts of the building and discuss its condition, focusing on common concerns about damp and decay. We will then look at some practical examples of repair – and see a practical demonstration of materials such as lime mortar. Then we will consider how best to tackle the finishing touches, or decoration, discussing different types of plasters and paint, and inserting and maintaining services, windows and glass.

The day will be led by Mark Womersley, from Womersley in Dewsbury who advise and supply materials to all manner of projects in the county and beyond. With years of knowledge and practical experience both at home and abroad, Mark is the perfect guide to demystifying many of the concerns that owners of old houses have about the condition of their properties.
