Join Oriel Prizeman for a talk about the scale and impact of the Carnegie Library programme, which extended to over 2600 grants worldwide on the standardisation of public space design. Noting the industrial focus of these gifts, she will highlight the key exemplars in Wales and point to the challenges of managing and maintaining these buildings today.Oriel Prizeman is Professor of Sustainable Building Conservation at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. Her book: Philanthropy and Light; Carnegie Libraries and the Advent of Transatlantic Standards for Public Space (2012, Routledge) based on her AHRC funded PhD at Cambridge is now partnered by an ebook: The Carnegie Libraries of Britain (2022 WSA) an output of her AHRC funded Shelf-Life project which has been shortlisted for the Colvin Prize 2022. With a background as a sole practitioner architect trained at the AA and Cambridge, Oriel became a full time academic, joining WSA in 2012 and launching the MSc Sustainable Building Conservation there in 2013.C20 Cymru will send you a Zoom link by email after you book, and again one hour before the talk begins.This link will enable you to “join” the event.
