To celebrate the tercentenary of the death in March 1726 of the great architect Sir John Vanbrugh it seems fitting for the BADA Friends to visit one of his most iconic buildings, Castle Howard. Recognised worldwide as the location for Brideshead Revisited and Bridgerton, Castle Howard has been home to nine generations of the Howard family since the building of the house in 1699.

In 2025 it received two prestigious awards for the major restoration programme of its historic interiors - the Historic Houses Award and the Georgian Group Architecture Award. Prior to the visit guests will be able to access a Zoom lecture given by BADA Friends’ Northern Representative Nicholas Merchant, who will give viewers an introduction to the house and the work of Vanbrugh. Easily accessible from York railway station or by car this house is a gem in the Yorkshire countryside.

If you want to make York your base for the weekend, then there is a lot to entertain you from Fairfax House to the newly refurbished Castle museum and the famous Shambles and Betty’s Tearooms not to mention BADA jewellery members Barbara Cattle.
