Southwark Cathedral has been a place of Christian worship for over 1000 years. Established as a small convent, it grew over the centuries into a priory, which became a parish church and then, in 1905, the Cathedral for the newly created Diocese of Southwark which serves the whole of London south of the river.The Cathedral’s patchwork architecture bears testament to its past as do the many monuments and memorials inside and outside the church. These are reminders of the rich history of this part of London and our association with such major figures in our creative history, including Chaucer, Shakespeare and Dickens.Southwark Cathedral is a place of worship, welcome and friendship, to rejoice in or find rest when you’re weary. We are London’s community Cathedral striving to live the example of Jesus, seeking to be a spiritual home for all and set at the heart of Bankside, buzzing with people and activity, a vibrant cultural and commercial destination.

S﻿outhwark Cathedral are delighted to be part of Cathedrals at Night a coordinated nationwide campaign by the Association of English Cathedrals which invites visitors to see our historic sacred spaces in a new light.Visit the Cathedral on this evening to see how it would have been lit in the past with hundreds of candles flickering in this ancient space.A﻿t 6.30pm our Lay-Clerks will be singing beautiful plainsong and at 7.30pm, Simon Hogan our Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will be performing the atmospheric Piéces de Fantaisie by Louis Vierne on the Cathedral organ.O﻿n the evening, visitors can also walk our Labyrinth. A labyrinth is a winding path used for meditation and prayer. Pilgrims have been walking labyrinths for thousands of years; this symbolic journey represents the path to God, enlightenment or your deepest self. It enables us, in the midst of the busyness of life, to be still and focus our thoughts and feelings.D﻿oors will open at 6.30pm and last admission will be 9.00pm for a 9.30pm close. T﻿he Cathedral Shop and Cafe will be open throughout the event.T﻿his very special evening is free to attend but donations are appreciated.
