Catheterisation training equips healthcare professionals with the skills to safely and effectively insert, manage, and remove urinary catheters, covering male, female, and suprapubic methods. The training includes learning about relevant anatomy, aseptic technique, infection prevention, patient dignity, and managing complications.


Course Outline:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology related to the urinary system and catheterisation.
  •  Identify the different types of urinary catheters, their applications, and their benefits and risks.
  •  Explain the indications, contraindications, potential complications.
  •  Understand the practical aspects of catheterisation, including catheter selection, insertion, catheter care, and removal.
  •  Demonstrate safe and hygienic practices when handling and assisting with urinary procedures to reduce the risk of infection.
  •  Demonstrate proper maintenance and troubleshooting of the catheter and associated equipment.
  •  Understand and apply the principles of patient consent, dignity, comfort, and privacy when supporting or assisting with urinary procedures.
  •  Practice catheter care in accordance with evidence-based guidelines and procedures.
  •  Recognise, manage, and report any complications or adverse events that may arise during urinary care procedures.
