Caustic Bloom: Wildflower Workshop

Join artist James Hewins to reclaim and re-wild a patch of land near GHT as part of his project, Caustic Bloom.

Re-wilding is a form of ecological restoration and conservation with an emphasis on recreating an area's natural, uncultivated state. James’ project, Caustic Bloom encourages biodiversity in reclaimed grasslands across the city, by cultivating wild flowers. 2pm: Meet at GHT and walk for to the wildflower area, which will be very local. 2pm - 3pm: Work with James to identify which plants and grass will need removing, and which wildflowers naturally grow in the area that can be cultivated. Then roll up your sleeves and get gardening! James will lead a discussion about art, activism and the environment, sharing information about his project Caustic Bloom and potential ideas for future collaborations. He will also talk about making habitats for bees and other insects and their important rolls as pollinators, as well as the practicalities and processes involved in reclaiming land.3pm - 3:30pm: Head back to GHT for a cuppa in the café to carry on discussions and view the exhibition, Art for Climate Action: Community Projects.

Access The ground floor bar and cafe to GHT have step free access from Town Quay Road. There is also step free access to the workshop site on Winkle Street. There will likely be an amount of standing, kneeling and bending. If this is a concern please get in touch and we can arrange for some seating to be taken with us to Winkle Street. If you think you might need to take some breaks please do. You’ll be welcome to go back to GHT to take a break whenever you feel you need to. Winkle Street is just round the corner from the main entrance to GHT. If you’d like to familiarise yourself before your visit you can take a virtual tour of the spaces on our website. You’ll also find a visual story so that you know what to expect and how to identify members of the GHT Team. This event is totally free to attend and we’ll also be operating a ‘pay what you feel’ system at the end of the workshop. If you have a good time and can spare a few pounds for GHT we’d really appreciate it. All donations are welcome. You can also support by buying drinks and snacks from the cafe! All funds raised will help us to keep supporting local artists and will help to build a creative community around GHT.
