Celebrating Britten

Ipswich Choral Societyis a friendly mixed choir of around 100 members. It is the second oldest Choral Society in England, having been formed in 1824. The Society has attracted a membership with a wide range of musical experiences and entertained the public with performances across a wide musical repertoire at Ipswich School, Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Ipswich Corn Exchange, Ipswich Music day, Aldeburgh Festival and charity concerts. The Society has performed in a number of countries including Turkey, France, Austria, Belgium and Italy.The Society is pleased to have as its President the international conductor Cem Mansur, who has conducted the choir five times in the UK, most recently at Snape Maltings Concert Hall, and twice in Turkey when members of the choir were invited to perform at the International Istanbul Music Festival and Izmir Festival.Ipswich Choral Society meets every Tuesday evening. Rehearsals start at 7:30pm in Northgate Arts Centre, Sidegate Lane West, Ipswich IP4 3DF. Registered Charity (number 278866) and members of Ipswich Arts Association and Making Music.

Marking the 110th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten performing some of his choral works and pieces by his musical influences.

Marking the 110th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten, Ipswich Choral Society will be performing a selection of his choral works at their &#x27;Celebrating Britten&#x27; concert on Saturday 27th May at St. Mary-le-Tower church in Ipswich. Described as the most important British composer since Henry Purcell, Britten composed a range of works including opera, other vocal music, orchestral and chamber pieces.Ipswich Choral Society and their Music Director Robin Walker will be joined by organist William Saunders, performing &#x27;Festival Te Deum&#x27;, &#x27;Rejoice in the Lamb&#x27; and &#x27;Jubilate Deo&#x27; by Britten. The concert will also include performances of works by Frank Bridge, who taught Britten composition, and key influences Ralph Vaughan WIlliams and John Ireland.Britten was President of ICS from 1948-58 and his uncle William Hockey was Music Director between 1906 to 1921. Another former ICS Music Director with connections to Britten is John Cooper, who conducted the choir from 1969 to 1979. John was involved in the first performance of Britten&#x27;s War Requiem.
