A full day of activities to commemorate the diverse communities that have shaped Elephant and Castle's recent history

Marking the second anniversary of the the closure and demolition of Elephant and Castle&#x27;s iconic Shopping Centre, this Saturday 24th September we are putting together a full day of activities from 1pm to 8pm including:-Special edition of the Elephant Walking Tour, with free coffee / food sampling from local traders-Community Mural unveiling-Dance Performances-Photo Exhibition-Film screenings + Q&amp;A-----<h3>1pm-2.30pm - The Elephant Walking Tour</h3>Join us... to learn about the area and sample coffee and food from some of the diverse communities in Elephant and Castle. Participants will get the opportunity to hear the stories and thoughts on the changes to the area from the traders that have made the area their home for the past 30 years. Marking the second anniversary of the the closure and demolition of Elephant and Castle&#x27;s iconic Shopping Centre, we believe it is important to embrace change however it is paramount to retain the diverse character of the area in light of the on-going ‘re-generation&#x27;.After the walking tour, people can enjoy some of the best Latin American, Caribbean and West African cuisine from the dozens of restaurants run by independent traders in Elephant and Castle and support local businesses! We will be providing a handy map to help guide you. <h3></h3><h3>4pm-5.30pm - Community Mural + Live Performance</h3>Talented Latin American artist <a href="https://www.instagram.com/gise_inkillay/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gisella Stapleton</a> will be painting her second mural at Elephant Road, and this time you will be able to paint it with her! Come along and have fun colouring a mural celebrating Afro Latinx women and music!As members of the community and Gisella are giving the mural the final touches, we will enjoy amazing street dances from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=349562966246575" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Expresión Inka UK</a>, a long-standing UK-based performing arts group that explores the diversity and richness of Latin America&#x27;s struggles for social justice through art, and who have performed several times inside the Shopping Centre(These day activities are funded via a Grant by The Mayor of London)<h3>6pm-6.30pm - &#x27;ÉLEFAN&#x27; Photography exhibition</h3>An exhibition of photos of local traders and collaborators from ÉLEFAN, by photographer Mike Excell.<h3>6.30pm - 8.30pm - Evening of Film screenings: &#x27;ÉLEFAN&#x27; and &#x27;The Palace&#x27; + Q&amp;A</h3>Two amazing short films about the long-standing Latin American traders and the Bingo<a href="https://www.joprichard.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">&#x27;The Palace&#x27;</a> - BAFTA Nominated Best British Short Film 2022. The Palace film is a loud, emotional portrait of a unique community rooted in Elephant and Castle saying a reluctant goodbye to London Palace Bingo Club, their social hub and playground of the past 20 years. Told through the stories of the regulars that loved and depended on it, and the owner who couldn’t save it.&#x27;ÉLEFAN&#x27; explores the relationship between space and identity among London&#x27;s Latinx community in the years leading up to the demolition of Elephant &amp; Castle shopping centre, a cultural hub for decades. Directed by Daniel Díaz, ÉLEFAN has been selected for the &#x27;Festival de Cine Latino Americano de Texas&#x27;.Following the screenings (29 minutes each), we will have a Q&amp;A session with community members, local traders and directors. Refreshments will be provided!Note: This is a community-led event run by Latin Elephant (registered charity 1158554). As with each event we run, we offer all activities for free. For this event, if you would like to offer a donation (as little as £1), we will be very grateful as it allows us to cover venue hire, equipment and refreshment costs, as well as continuing to run community events for all!
