Cellexus and Cellevate Focus Group

The National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) is the UK’s national hub for research, policy, training and innovation in biofilm technologies. NBIC exists to create a fusion of world-class interdisciplinary research and industry partnerships to deliver breakthrough science and technologies to control and exploit biofilms. NBIC’s mission is to drive global leadership in biofilm research, training, and innovation by tackling key challenges crucial to the UK’s future prosperity. Biofilms are central to our most important global challenges – from infections, antimicrobial resistance and food safety to water security, marine biofouling and corrosion, and exert significant economic, social and environmental impacts estimated at $5 trillion per annum. NBIC was established in 2017 by four lead universities (Edinburgh, Liverpool, Nottingham and Southampton), with funding from BBSRC and Innovate UK. NBIC’s vision is to create a pioneering national centre by bringing together the founding universities, an expanded network of research institutions and industry partners, and fostering an inclusive approach that engages new companies and research organisations.

This event is a must for anyone working in the field of biofilm culturing, who is interested in developing improved model systems.

This focus group will be particularly useful if you would like these systems to better reflect different 3D geometries and novel culturing conditions for preparing biofilms or materials produced by biofilms in single or multispecies systems.There is a well-established need for improved biofilm models in a range of contexts. At NBIC, we have become aware of a potential use for a combination of existing techniques from two emerging technology companies which may help address this need. The two technologies are the Cellevate Microcarrier and the Cellexus Cellmaker airlift bioreactor. The companies believe these technologies could be used together to cultivate biofilms in a radical new 3-dimensional way. The companies came to NBIC to access our network of leading biofilm researchers to assist in advising them on how they can better design this system and whether you see that it has useful potential. They are looking for experts willing to share their experience and needs in biofilm culturing and model systems. They wish to explore your thoughts on how to best use these technologies together in the areas of interest to you to help advance your research.
