Centipedes (Chilopoda) are an intriguing group of animals that look superficially very similar, but in-fact there are over 50 species found in Britain. They are carnivorous and therefore a significant predator of a range of other organisms. They are easily overlooked because of their secretive lifestyles in soil or under bark but are an important component of an ecosystem. This webinar will look at their general lifestyle and the key characters used to identify them. Centipedes can offer some initial difficulties for the beginner when identifying species, but a few simple pointers and the ability to count up to 100 will help you to quickly get to grips with many species! This webinar complements the previous one on millipedes and will again be based on the British Myriapod &amp; Isopod Group digital guide. The content will be ideal for a beginner and you do not need to have attended the previous webinar to participate. Tutor information: Paul Richards works as Ecological Monitoring Officer for Sheffield &amp; Rotherham Wildlife Trust and was formerly a researcher in urban biodiversity at the University of Sheffield and Senior Curator of Natural History at Museums Sheffield. He has nearly 40 years experience as a professional zoologist, curator and ecologist specialising in ground invertebrates. He is Sorby Natural History Society recorder for Millipedes, Centipedes, Woodlice, Harvestmen, and Pseudoscorpions and author of the BMIG guide mentioned above as well as the FSC guide to British Harvestmen and a new atlas of Dragonflies of the Sheffield area. He is an active contributor to a number of Facebook invertebrate groups and is a passionate advocate of biological recording.Paul will give an introduction to centipede identification followed by an interactive question and answer session.Please book your space via Eventbrite and you will be sent information on how to join the webinar.This session will run on Zoom.
