Come and hear first-hand about events and Home Office asylum policy at the military barracks. With special guest Clare Moseley, founder of Care4CalaisThe good-hearted people of Hastings have welcomed people seeking sanctuary for over 20 years, since it became a designated dispersal town for people in the asylum system. As a recognised City of Sanctuary, we have extended this welcome to families arriving under the Syrian Resettlement Programme. In a time when we are all struggling to manage our lives, the lives of people seeking asylum have become particularly challenging. Now, down the road from us in Folkstone, several hundred men are at this moment locked in ex-army barracks while a Covid outbreak sweeps through them. We invite you to join us to find out more about the current situation at the barracks and the policies associated with their use.Care4Calais has been hugely active in helping people trapped in the barracks in the recent Covid outbreak, and we are deeply grateful to Clare Moseley for agreeing to be our speaker at the meeting. She will bring us up to date with the situation in the barracks. Jay Kramer, Co-Chair of HCoS Campaigns Team, will also present a briefing on Clearsprings, the contractor paid enormous amounts by the Home Office to provide and run asylum accommodation at the barracks and also in Hastings, while other speakers will add further information.There will be a Q and A.In the past few weeks, Hastings Community of Sanctuary Campaigns Team has focussed their campaign to end indefinite immigration detention on to the specific question of the hundreds of people held in disused army barracks. This has recently become desperately urgent, following a hunger strike in protest over insanitary and inhumane conditions at the Napier Barracks in Folkstone, and then a massive outbreak of Covid-19 which has spread rapidly through the hundreds of men now locked inside the camp.We have been urging our MP Sally-Ann Hart to join the mounting demands, including among fellow Conservative MPs, to close the barracks and move all of the men somewhere warm and Covid-safe; we know that she has received many letters about this. We know that this kind of treatment of people seeking asylum is planned to be extended in the longer term. Only public outrage and protest will bring about change to the Home Office&#x27;s current policies and future plans. Challenging the barracks!
