Choosing materials that are responsibly sourced, reduce waste and promote social welfare is critical in the process of making for change. Combining this with innovative design transforms how and why we make, creating a better future of making. Join The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust for our fourth annual Ethical Making Symposium, ChangeMaking. This year, our conference will focus on how through innovative design strategies and alternative sourcing methods, jewellers and makers can design out waste, source ethically and create better brands--to create for change. We welcome all students, makers and industry professionals to attend.The 2022 ChangeMaking symposium will be held at City of Glasgow College (CoGC) hosted by The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust (SGT) in partnership with The Goldsmiths' Centre. Ticket price includes:<ul><li>Tote bag on arrival</li><li>Morning tea and coffees</li><li>Talks</li></ul>Please bring a reusable water bottle with you.We welcome attendees to arrive from 9:30 am to join us for morning tea and coffee, with the symposium to begin promptly at 10am. Please note that attendees are required to follow Scottish government guidelines regarding COVID, including the wearing of masks. We ask that all attendees wear masks for the duration of the event, minus coffee breaks. With speakers, including:Susie Ganch: RJM: What happens next?Susie’s talk will be focused on studio practices after participating in Radical Jewellery Makeover (RJM), to conclude the RJM Scotland edition and encourage the continuity of respectful material sourcing and making.Susie Ganch is an artist and educator living in Richmond, VA, where she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Craft/Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. Part of her practice is directing Radical Jewelry Makeover, an international jewellery mining, and recycling project that continues to travel across the country and abroad.Rachael Colley: Re:flux - Communicating Bodily Experience Through Jewellery, Cutlery and SculptureRachael's talk will discuss how her sensory making practice broadens her experience of 'consuming' food, through the creation of jewellery using food waste. She also enjoys engaging with the public through dining events where the use of her ambiguous eating implements aims to convey something of the challenges she faces whilst consuming food, as a sufferer of the auto-immune disease systemic sclerosis.Based in Sheffield, the UK’s ‘Steel City’, Rachael is an award-winning artist and senior lecturer in Jewellery and Metalwork at Sheffield Hallam University.Mary Michel: The Creative Coin ProjectMary Michel is the Co-Director of Ostrero, which works to grow the Circular Economy in Scotland through a variety of projects, including Making Circles, a series of circular design and making workshops for schools, universities and organisations across Scotland. She is interested in how alternative economies can bring about a fairer world for society and the environment and is working with Edinburgh University and Edinburgh Napier University on the “Creative Coin” research project. This explores how to incentivise sustainable and circular practices in the Creative Industries. Mary is a Trustee of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Scotland.Arabel Lebrusan: When the Diamonds Met the Donut: Operating an ethical jewellery business with the help of an economic frameworkArabel joins us to discuss how every aspect of her business is informed by the Doughnut Economics framework - from the materials and processes involved in the manufacture of jewels to the way employees' pensions are invested. Arabel Lebrusan is a leading artist, one of the world's first ever Fairtrade Gold licensees, founding member of the Fair Luxury campaign group and Creative Director of her eponymous ethical jewellery brand, Lebrusan Studio and now a new member of the Scottish Goldsmiths Trust Ethical Making committee.Charlie Betts from Betts Metals: Moral Metal – Why responsibly sourced gold adds upCharlie will talk about Single Mine Origin (SMO) bullion products manufactured by Betts at their Buxton site.Charlie Betts represents the ninth consecutive generation of the Betts family to run The Betts Group; a 262 year-old British business which focusses on refining precious metals and manufacturing jewellery and investment products. Through partnership between The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust and The Goldsmiths’ Centre, the programme empowers others to develop their own ethical making approach and spread awareness of environmental and social sustainability in the making of jewellery and silver.The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust supports and promotes the education, art and craft of Scotland’s gold and silversmithing heritage and trade.
