Based on new, original research, this event will shine a light on the hallmarks of change-ready, change-able teams and share some practical tools developed during a piece of research that saw the collaboration of 11 employing organisations.


When it comes to change, organisations are encouraged to be agile and adaptable. Since change often comes whether you are ready or not, it pays to be equipped to act swiftly as both planned and unexpected situations arise. The key is to be primed and change-ready at all times.

The IES 2018 Annual Conference explored the ‘alchemy’ of agility required by organisations to rapidly change in order to meet the growing demands made of them. The good news from that conference is that agile organisations can be built. Now it’s time to get practical and focus on what can be done and how. Since teams are the primary way that many organisations produce and deliver, it makes sense to ensure we have change-ready, change-capable teams.

This workshop will report on findings from an IES/Henley Forum collaboration, which researched what helps teams to feel ready and able to implement change. In the workshop, we will share some of the tools that we have developed during this project, as well as some of the secrets we uncovered from the most change-able teams, to guide your thinking on how you can use these tools in your team(s).

Topics we will cover include:

  • Results from the IES and Henley Forum research.
  • Working with business-critical teams to assess change-readiness and change-capability.
  • Helping reflective practice on change among leadership teams.
  • Embedding learning from previous change efforts.
  • Using appreciative inquiry and co-production methods to encourage a team climate of togetherness.
  • Connecting change to purpose.

Who should attend?

HR Directors and managers; change and OD specialists; and team leaders with a personal interest in change.

How will you/your organisation benefit from this event?

Our research shows that what teams do for themselves is a powerful enabler, so we decided to write a guide for staff and team members that would allow them to help themselves. Delegates will get a preview of this practical guide (exclusively for IES HR Network and Henley Member organisations).

Delegates will also benefit from time out to debate with their peers from other organisations how the research findings and tools developed could enhance HR’s ability to add value by ‘doing change better’.


This event will be facilitated by Alison Carter and Megan Edwards from IES. Alison and Megan have been collaborating with 13 HR, change and organisational learning specialists from 11 organisations in four countries as part of the joint IES Network/The Henley Forum initiative to develop practical tools to help change-ready, change-capable teams.

Alison Carter, IES Principal Research Fellow

Alison has over twenty years’ experience of research, evaluation and consultancy. She is an expert in HR, leadership and change and an experienced consultant in supporting early-adopter teams and organisations in introducing and embedding large scale changes to ways of working. She has an MBA from Henley Management College and a professional doctorate and is a Chartered Fellow of CIPD and Member of the Academy of Management.

Megan Edwards, IES Research Fellow

Megan has been working in the field of people management and HR since 2011. She began as an HR practitioner overseeing the HR function in a medium sized advertising agency. Now Megan is a Research Fellow at IES, specialising in a wide range of people management related research and consultancy with a particular interest in organisational change, employee engagement and leadership. Megan completed her MSc in Occupational Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London in 2016.
