Description

If big and open data are the answer, then what is the question? Examining charity funding using grantmaker and government spending data

We'd like to invite you to spend the day using data from grantmakers to get insight into how charities are funded.

This event, part of the ESRC's Civil Society Data Partnership programme, and hosted by NCVO, the Third Sector Research Centre and 360Giving, will use data on spending by grantmakers and local authorities to answer questions.

We aim to bring together researchers, developers, grantmakers and frontline charities. After an introduction to the information we’ve collected, we’ll consider the kind of questions that might be answered using it. There will be practical, hands-on sessions in which you will have a chance to analyse the the different datasets and visualise the findings, as well as developing new ways of navigating and viewing the data.

We'll be using the data to answer questions like:

  • Where does the funding go? - mapping funding by causes and at various geographical scales
  • How do funders overlap? - are there themes or areas that are covered by multiple funders
  • How successful are funded organisations? - what happens to organisations after they receive funding? E.g. are they more or less likely to survive or thrive?
  • Can funding respond to particular events or issues?
  • Are funders reaching the organisations that can make the biggest difference?

Lunch will be provided. Reasonable travel and accomodation expenses can also be reimbursed - contact us for more details.
