About this event

Booking will close on Monday 13th October 2025 at 12 noon.

Due to limited resources we are UNABLE TO ACCEPT LATE BOOKINGS after this date.

This course will take place ONLINE on ZOOM.

Thursday evenings 6.30 - 8.30 p.m for five weeks, 16th October - 13th November 2025.

Be inspired by the masters of this remarkable art form. How do they do it? What’s a Chekhov gun? What’s a deus ex machina? What’s a red herring? How are character traits used to develop the plot? What is a fable?

Join me and find out by reading the stories of Anton Chekhov, George Saunders, F Scot Fitzgerald, Margaret Atwood (and others).

Write your own stories and receive personal feedback and advice. Help with preparation for publication is available, too.

Or simply enjoy reading and discussing the details which make these works exceptional. You can submit your own reviews of the stories.

Tutor: Susan Haigh

Originally a linguist, with an interest in international literature, Susan Haigh is a graduate of the Dundee University MLitt degree course. She has taught aspects of creative writing at LLD since its inception. Since switching to Zoom classes, she has attracted students from all over the world. Her short stories and poetry have been published in a variety of anthologies and journals. She recently relocated from her home in the Loire Valley, France, to Newburgh, in North-east Fife.
