Overview

We are very excited to be launching Chener Readings on Thursday 4th June.

Our first event will focus on debut writers, with readings from Joe Conroy, Gurnaik Johal, Grace Murray and Eva Wyles.

Joe Conroy (b. 2002) is a writer from Liverpool. In Out, his debut novel, is set for publication with Cipher Press in October 2026.

Gurnaik Johal is a writer from west London. His 2022 collection We Move won the Somerset Maugham Award, the Tata Literature Live! Prize and the Galley Beggar Short Story Prize. In 2025, he was named an Observer Best New Novelist, and Saraswati, his debut novel, was nominated for the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize, the Sunday Times Charlotte Aitken Young Writer Award, the Jhalak Prize and the RSL Ondaatje Prize.

Grace Murray was born in 2003, and grew up in Norfolk. Blank Canvas, her debut novel, was published as part of Penguin’s WriteNow scheme. She features in the Sunday Times Young Power List 2026, and her work has also appeared in The London Magazine.

Eva Wyles is a writer from New Zealand based in South London. She is a recipient of the Jean Squire Project Scholarship and graduated from the International Institute of Modern Letters in 2021. Her debut short story collection, Deliverywoman, was published by Influx Press in 2025. She is currently working on a novel set in London.
