Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus: Susceptibility and transmission routes

During this talk, Theodora Commandeur will update us on her latest research on Chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV). Theodora is a PhD student at Newcastle University. Her PhD is focussing on the interaction between diet and forage availability and CBPV.Over the last 2 years, Theodora has conducted experiments and she will share her results with us. She has looked at a range of transmission pathways of the virus, including environmental contamination, faecal contamination and via trophallaxis, on both summer and winter bees.More about CBPVChronic bee paralysis is caused by the unclassified bipartite RNA virus known as chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV). Until recently this virus caused a rare but severe disease in honey bees, with very characteristic symptoms including abnormal trembling, flightlessness and shiny, hairless abdomens. Infected symptomatic individuals die within a week leading to mounds of dead bees outside affected colonies, which sometimes causes a colony collapse or bees that are too weakened for pollination/honey production. The virus can be transmitted between adult bees mechanically and faecal orally. There is clear evidence that this viral disease is emerging, but the drivers are currently unknown. Although originally from County Durham, she has lived in Hampshire, Cornwall and North Yorkshire. She has a passion for research and has been looking at honey bee nutrition, immunity, and many common diseases but mostly focusing on chronic bee paralysis virus. With respect to her research, before starting in the lab, she examined previous research to investigate other possible transmission routes of CBPV and to identify the location of the virus as it moves within the bee body, using a conceptual model to visualise these movements. Theodora's aim is to develop this model further and to perform further experiments to enable a deeper understanding of the transmission routes of CBPV more fully. Once established, the links between susceptibility, immunity and nutrition will be clearer. Theodora's research will inform beekeepers' husbandry and beekeeping around the world to better deal with CBPV.
