Description
Transformer monitoring and defect location using UHF PD sensors
Partial discharge (PD) is well known as an indicator of insulation weakness and degradation, which can lead to costly failure of high-value assets. Ultra-high frequency (UHF) methods for detecting and locating PD were first applied to gas insulated substations (GIS) in the 1990s and have subsequently been widely adopted. This presentation will introduce the principles of UHF PD detection in HV insulation systems, followed by an overview of their application to power transformers. Topics covered will include (i) installation of sensors, (ii) UHF signals & diagnostics, and (iii) how UHF PD detection can be used a tool for enhancing quality control. UHF PD location will be illustrated by case studies on transformers during final test and in service.
Speakers background: Martin Judd
Martin began his engineering career working on radar systems and components with Marconi and EEV in Lincoln. Moving to Glasgow in 1993 to join the University of Strathclyde, he pioneered ultra-high frequency (UHF) methods for partial discharge (PD) detection in gas insulated substations and transformers over a period of 20 years, becoming Professor in High Voltage Technologies and manager of the HV Laboratory. In 2014, he left academia to found High Frequency Diagnostics, a company that supports the development of new electromagnetic wave sensor technologies and applications, particularly for high frequency sensing and diagnosis of PD activity in HV equipment. Martin is currently a UK representative on CIGRE JWG A2/D1.51 “Improvements to PD Measurements for FAT & SAT of Power Transformers.”
