Feminist Duration Reading Group

Out loud reading and discussion group on  citation as a mode of queer feminist intertextual intimacy and identification.

This event considers citation—the acknowledgement of other people, texts and artworks as sources of inspiration and material — as a mode of intertextual intimacy and identification. A focus on Chapter Three of Lauren Fournier’s new book Autofiction as Feminist Practice in Art, Writing, and Criticism (2021), prompts reflections on the role of citation in forging community and communion, in queer feminist contexts.Centring on Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts (2015), Fournier’s chapter locates the book within a queer lineage that encompasses Roland Barthes’s A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments (1977) and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and Adam Frank’s ‘Shame in the Cybernetic Fold: Reading Silvan Tomkins.’ She shows how these works, which blur boundaries between literary and theoretical genres, and value the everyday and the intimate, shed light on what constitutes transgressive, and normative, queer acts. Another touchstone for Fournier is the second wave feminist practice of writing from, and in, the margins, exemplified by Gloria E. Anzaldua and Nicole Brossard, as well as Nelson and Barthes. Prompted by Nelson’s incorporation of her lover, trans artist Harry Dodge, into the book, Fournier raises questions about citation and homage, intersubjectivity and influence, and “the ethical relationships between the writing ‘self’ and an ‘other.’”Lauren FournierLauren Fournier will introduce the session. She is a writer, curator, video artist, and filmmaker based in Toronto. Her work brings together artistic practice, exhibition-making, critical and creative writing, fermenting and food practices, socially-responsive programming, and collaboration.ReadingTogether, in small online groups, we will read from ‘Citation as Relation: Intertextual Intimacies and Identifications,’ 2021, from Lauren Fournier’s Autofiction as Feminist Practice in Art, Writing, and Criticism (MIT Press, 2021).
