Plato's Republic Session 4
Fourth session in our project to read Plato's Republic. In Chapter 4 Socrates explains the eduction of the guardian class. This contrasts dramatically with current views of education. Plato places great store on education in building the character of a societies leaders. This should be a lively discussion. Stephanus numbers 376 to 412 or Chapter 4 Primary Education for the Guardians in Waterfield translation.
As in the previous session, I am adding extra reading from Plutarch. I want to focus on the Spartans who are central to Plato's conception of the ideal state. Plutarch's Greek Lives, Lycurgus and Agesilaus from the Waterfield translations. Plutarch is much easier to read and provides a hugely entertaining backdrop to our exploration of Plato's Republic.
