The theme this year is around things to consider when using UX research methods to include harder to reach groups. The morning session will be delivered by Simon Bowie and Karine Larose; they will be sharing what they have learned about inclusion and diversity through their own research conducted in the summer of 2016. This will include some short activities to help us reflect on disability and think about best practices for including disabled students in the library experience.

The afternoon session will be delivered by Julia Richardson from University of Bristol and involves sharing how to set up a UX research project for students that are not regularly on campus.

During summer 2016, they ran user experience research into the information seeking behaviour of undergraduate and postgraduate students at Imperial College London. Looking critically at this research, they realised what they were doing wrong and got an insight into the limitations of their approach to inclusion and diversity in UX research in libraries. In this session, they want to talk about their methodology for UX research, run through some short activities to help us reflect on disability, and think about best practices for including students with disabilities in the library experience.

2.15 Julia Richardson, Using UX in libraries to assess effectiveness of support for part time and distance-based learners

During the summer of 2017 Julia carried out a cultural probe in order to better understand the experience of part time and distance-based students studying at the University of Bristol. This session will outline how the research was carried out, what was learned and will enable us to consider whether some of the methodology might be used to find out more about the experience of disabled students using our services.
