Climate Question Time

Priestley Centre for Climate Futures

Leading scientists from the Priestley International Centre for Climate at the University of Leeds and other universities from the North of England join a media expert and the Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council for this Climate Question Time event, the culmination of a week of public engagement on climate change for Green Great Britain Week (15-19 October).
Representing a range of disciplines from the physical science of climate change to energy policy and behaviour change, the panellists will answer questions collected from members of the public during a series of "Climate Chats" held simultaneously in Leeds and other cities.  Attendees can also submit questions with their Eventbrite registration.

The Chair will be Professor Andy Gouldson, Professor of Environmental Policy at the University of Leeds, Chair of Leeds Climate Commission and Deputy Director of the ESRC Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy.
The host for the evening is Christine Talbot of ITV Calendar News.
This event is jointly presented by the Priestley International Centre for Climate, Leeds Climate Commission and the ESRC Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy (CCCEP).
<H3>Panellists:</H3>
Prof Lisa Emberson: Lisa Emberson is Centre Director, Stockholm Environment Institute, University of York. She took on the position in December 2012 and was made Professor in October 2017. She has over 20 years’ experience in the field of air pollution and climate change focussing on impacts on agricultural yields, forest productivity and the functioning of terrestrial semi-natural ecosystems. Recently, she is actively involved in the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution and more recently has been involved in UNEP initiatives to investigate the role of short-lived air pollutants (SLCPs) in human health, agricultural productivity and near term climate change
Prof Piers Forster: Piers Forster is Director of the Priestley International Centre for Climate at the University of Leeds. Piers is Professor of Physical Climate Change in the School of Earth and Environment. He researches various aspects of climate change, including its causes, impacts, and adaptation and mitigation strategies. Piers has been a lead author for the past two Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports and is a lead author on the IPCC’s Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C.
Prof Hayley Fowler: Hayley Fowler is Professor of Climate Change Impacts in the Water Resource Systems Engineering Group in the School Engineering at Newcastle University. She is a hydroclimatologist with more than 15 years of experience in analysing changing precipitation extremes and their impacts on hydrological systems. Her latest work focuses on improving projections of extreme rainfall events and catchment area models to better understand how intense rainfall will affect individual and multiple areas, as well as recent trends in climate extremes and their impacts on future projections of flood and drought risks.
Dr Sarah Mander: Sarah Mander is a Senior Research Fellow at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Manchester. Her work is interdisciplinary, with a particular focus on integrating stakeholder and public perspectives with technical and modelling assessments in relation to carbon budgets and mitigation pathways; CCS; and low carbon energy technology.
Councillor James Lewis: James Lewis is Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council and Executive Member for Resources and Sustainability. He is also deputy chair of the Leeds Climate Commission. He represents Kippax and Methley ward in Leeds.
Dr Mat Hope: Mat Hope is Editor of DeSmog UK, an investigative journalism outlet dedicated to uncovering lobbying and corporate wrongdoing on environmental issues. He has been a climate change journalist for six years, and was previously an Associate Editor for Nature Climate Change and writer for Carbon Brief. He has a PhD in the political communication of climate change.
Chair: Prof Andy Gouldson: Andy Gouldson is Professor of Environmental Policy at the University of Leeds.He is also  Chair of Leeds Climate Commission, Economics Lead for the Coalition for Urban Transitions and Deputy Director of the ESRC Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy. He is an inter-disciplinary social scientist with significant experience working on a range of issues relating to environmental policy and management. For the last decade, Andy has focused especially on climate change and on the case for, and routes to low carbon and climate resilient development, especially in cities.
Host: Christine Talbot: Christine has been the main presenter of ITV Calendar, covering the Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Humberside region since 2001.  She and her co presenter Duncan Wood are the longest serving regional television partnership.  She is an experienced journalist, broadcaster and event host and worked in newspapers and at the BBC before moving to her current role.    She is also a patron and ambassador of several Yorkshire-based charities

Led by the University of Leeds and Leeds City Council, its aim is to bring people and organisations together to shape Leeds’ transition to a low carbon, climate resilient city and to mirror at a city scale the strategic priorities of the UK Committee on Climate Change (UKCCC).

The Centre is hosted jointly by the University of Leeds and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and is chaired by Professor Lord Stern of Brentford. It is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The Centre’s mission is to advance public and private action on climate change through rigorous, innovative research.
