Play bioFrancesca once had it all. Now she is unemployed. Her debts are soaring, her health is flagging, and her heart is ailing. Desperately trying to hold everything together, she takes a job as a cleaning lady – a role for which she has no credentials except an obsessive compulsive disorder. This job offers her a new lease of life as ‘Franki the Singing Cleaning Lady’. Close to the Edge explores the mental health and well being of older black women in Britain today. It explores coping strategies for survival and how to rise above adversity when your mental stability is threatened.The performance will be followed by a Q &amp; A session facilitated by wellbeing practitioner Maxine Shervington with actress Sharon Jones and writer/director Viv Manjaro of Planet Arts.Red Earth CollectiveRed Earth Collective is a Birmingham-based social enterprise that uses the arts to stimulate mental health conversations about racialised and marginalised communities seldom heard by policymakers and mental health commissioners. It works with professional and emerging artists, musicians and actors that have experienced mental health problems to create and deliver innovative and sustainable programmes, campaigns and events, using theatre, music, film and discussion to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes and support mental health and well being.Planet Arts Social Enterprise Group (PAG) was established in 2003 in Gloucestershire by Birmingham-born Viv Manjaro. It aims to use theatre arts as a tool for personal development and change, encourage dialogue between diverse cultures and strengthen the talent of underrepresented artists. Between 2003 and 2011 PAG produced The Shed Show, Caribbean Angels, Red Letter Day, Small Miracles Academy, Ask Jeeves’ and Running in the Family.
