Led by the UK Office for National Statistics Data Science Campus in partnership with the UNECE HLG-MOS, the ML 2022 Group will build on the outcomes of the work of the UNECE HLG-MOS Machine Learning project and, in consultation with existing and new members, develop and deliver on priority areas of work.

Join us for the GitHub edition of Coffee and Coding!

Coffee and Coding Session with Statistics Canada – ONS-UNECE Machine Learning Group In this session, Statistics Canada will provide an interactive lesson on using GitHub, and an introduction to Git. They’ll go through forking a repository, making a commit, collaboration, and how to avoid uploading your data on GitHub. The second half of the session will be theory and a discussion on the difference between GitHub and Git, what a Git project looks like normally, and best practices.They’ll answer questions, show you the value of Git, and get you on your way to using GitHub and Git with your projects!Prerequisite Knowledge and IT set-up: Participants only need basic technical skills, a GitHub account, and web browser. Please create your GitHub account before the session if you would like to follow along.Who should attend?Our Coffee and Coding sessions aim to help build data science capability in the official statistics community. Everyone is welcome to join, but as places are limited, priority will be given to those working in statistical organisations. Tabitha Williams BiographyTabitha has been with the Government of Canada for 7 years, and with Statistics Canada for 5. She believes that coding and statistics are for everyone, and that using GitHub is a crucial component of that. She runs Git training at Statistics Canada, and is sometimes helped out by Stitch the cat.Brittny Vongdara BiographyBrittny has been at Statistics Canada for over 5 years where she’s worked on social surveys, price indices, and cloud migration before joining the Innovation Surge Team. She has experience in R, Power BI, and SAS. In her spare time she enjoys climbing and hanging out with her cat Pamplemousse.
