Collecting within Academies

The RSA runs a year-round programme of exhibitions, artist opportunities and related educational talks and events which support artists at all stages of their careers. The Academy’s distinguished history is reflected in its extensive collections and archives and has been awarded Recognised Collection status by Museums Galleries Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government for being a collection of National Significance to Scotland.Led by eminent artists and architects, the RSA embodies a wealth of professional experience in Fine Art and Architecture with many of its Members taking a leading role in higher education and in many of Scotland’s leading cultural institutions.Over the last decade, every aspect of the RSA has been interrogated to ensure that the Academy remains relevant to the needs of today’s artists and architects. Importantly, the Academy continues to evolve, electing new Members, exhibiting new work, developing its collections and supporting and promoting excellence in contemporary Scottish art and architecture.

The RSA Sir William Gillies Bequest Lecture 2017
This symposium will be a rare opportunity to hear a discussion by the Presidents of all four British national academies: the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy in London, the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin and the Royal Ulster Academy in Belfast, on collecting and how this is reflected within the various institutions. Joining the discussion will be David R. Brigham, President of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, to which the RSA’s second President, John Watson Gordon, was awarded Honorary Membership and which is the oldest academy in America. 
 
This event is part of of a programme celebrating the Ages of Wonder exhibtion. 
 
Ages of Wonder: Scotland's Art 1540 to Now, collected by the Royal Scottish Academy 4 November 2017 - 7 January 2018 
Ages of Wonder builds on the moment in 1910 when the Royal Scottish Academy transferred a number of significant works to the National Collection, securing exhibiting rights within the building shared by the two institutions today. The Academy had been a force behind the establishment of a national collection and NGS and RSA had previously coexisted in what is now the National Gallery of Scotland. Ages of Wonder reunites RSA works transferred to NGS with a selection of those remaining in the Academy’s Nationally Significant Collection and those collected by the Academy up to the present day.
The exhibition will include over 450 works by over 270 artists and architects, from the masterpiece ‘The Adoration of the Magi’ painted by Jacopo Bassano of 1540, to recent Diploma Works by Callum Innes and Alison Watt, and works commissioned for and during the exhibition by Calum Colvin, Kenny Hunter and Richard Murphy
