Academic freedom and Palestine advocacy on UK campuses.

Over the last few years, Palestine-related academic work and advocacy has faced increased, and sometimes severe, risks to academic freedom on UK campuses. University staff and students have been targeted by means of smear campaigns, malicious complaints, and online and in-person harassment by anti-Palestinian groups. These attacks have sometimes been enabled by Members of Parliament, and even by representatives of universities and student unions. <a href="https://elsc.support" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The European Legal Support Center</a> (ELSC), an independent organisation, has been defending and empowering the Palestine solidarity movement in mainland Europe and the UK through legal means. During this event, the ELSC will aim to shed light on the following aspects of combatting the chilling effect on academic freedom and Palestine advocacy: 1. highlight the growing hostility and repression of Palestine related academic work and advocacy on UK campuses and its chilling effects; 2. describe the ELSC’s support mechanisms and the scale of the <a href="https://gal-dem.com/universities-ihra-guidelines-palestine/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">ELSC’s work in the UK</a>. The talk will also include a presentation of the ELSC’s experiences of assisting students and academics and discuss best practices and lesson learned with participants. The event will end with recommendations as well as an interactive discussion with staff and students.*Registration is required to attend this free event for University of Warwick staff and students. Please direct queries about this event to administrator@warwickucu.org.ukSpeaker:Giovanni Fassina, Programme Director, ELSC Giovanni Fassina oversees the legal defence team and the strategic litigation work at the ELSC. Previously, he worked as legal trainee at a Human Rights law firm in Venice (Italy), where he specialized on cases related to mass torts litigation, Business &amp; Human Rights and civil liability before domestic courts and on violations of the right to life and the right of a due process before the European Court of Human Rights. In 2017 he carried out a research project with the Human Rights NGO Al Marsad on the Israeli oil exploration in the Occupied Syrian Golan. Giovanni graduated in International Law from the University of Trento and worked for many years in the Occupied Palestinian Territory in the development sector.Chair/Discussant:Dr. Tara Mulqueen, Co-Chair Warwick UCUTara Mulqueen holds a PhD in Law from Birkbeck College, University of London. She also holds an MRes in Law (Distinction) from Birkbeck College and a BA (Hons) in Political Science from Brooklyn College, City University of New York. Prior to joining Warwick, she taught at Birkbeck College, the London School of Economics and the School of Oriental and African Studies. She has also worked as a consultant and education coordinator for Law for Life: the Foundation for Public Legal Education.
