Does our society need a set of common values? If so, what should they be?
And what does all this this mean for our education system and schools?
In light of the 'Trojan Horse' scandal and the Government's 'British Values' agenda, the <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://facebook.com/youngfabianseducation" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Young Fabians Education Network</A> is bringing together an exciting panel of four expert speakers, with diverse perspectives, to explore these questions.
 Our Panel includes: Jon Cruddas MP - Former Policy Coordinator, Labour Party Jeremy Hayward - Lecturer in Citizenship, UCL Institute of Education Naved Siddiqi - Trustee, New Horizons in British Islam Mia Lloyd - Head of Religious Education, Secondary school in Tower Hamlets, East London Join us on Tuesday 22nd March, 18.30 – 20.00 in Committee Room 12, House of Commons for what promises to be a lively debate.

Media commentary in the run-up to the 2015 general election, coverage of the 'Trojan Horse' scandal, and the Government's demand for 'Fundamental British Values' in our schools have exposed a long-existing fault line in national attitudes to collective identity and shared values. One section of the English population approves of public displays of patriotism and the affirmation of national pride. Another is less attracted to expressions of collective identity, and is also concerned about the danger of excluding minorities. Is there any dialogue to be had across this divide?
As old as Athenian democracy is the practice of citizenship education – once conceived as a crucial precondition for a democracy’s good health. What should the role of schools in England today be in forming the citizenship and values of the next generation? What is the larger whole to which the next generation should believe it belongs to?
As a way of approaching these issues, the discussion will turn around three questions:

<LI>What are these values, or what should they be?</LI>
<LI>What does this mean, practically, for our education system and schools?</LI>
