Join us for Culture Declares Emergency's first Community Breakfast of 2025!

Our friendly Breakfast gatherings run from 9-10.30 am (UK time), on the last Tuesday of alternating months. These are relatively informal spaces for the community to network, welcome new declarers, bring questions and challenges, and share knowledge and practices. Everyone is welcome, including those who haven't yet declared.For our first Breakfast of 2025, we're exploring: <h4>Art that changes things: how can creative practice bring about social and ecological transformation?</h4>Art and culture can do more than ‘respond to’ or ‘raise awareness of’ the earth crisis. Whilst eco exhibitions proliferate around the world, many are asking if art that merely invites speculation goes deep enough. As Marv Recinto <a href="https://artreview.com/ecocritical-art-hayward-dear-earth-climate-crisis-exhibition/" title="https://artreview.com/ecocritical-art-hayward-dear-earth-climate-crisis-exhibition/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">wrote</a>, ‘eco exhibitions won’t save us’. Artistic and cultural practices have the power to actually begin to shift things, through deeply engaged, collaborative, place-based processes. We’re asking: what sort of creative practices bring about action in the face of social and ecological collapse? This is an invitation for the community: come and listen, reflect, and share your practices and approaches.We’ll hear from the following artists and cultural workers:<ul><li><a href="https://www.zenaedwards.com/" title="https://www.zenaedwards.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zena Edwards</a>, UK based poet, curator and multidisciplinary artist of Afri-Carib-British heritage, whose work is rooted in identifying our connection to our 'humanness', the imagination, the urban natural world, and the Earth.</li><li><a href="https://freddieyauner.co.uk/" title="https://freddieyauner.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Freddie Yauner</a>, a multidisciplinary artist whose work celebrates nature, unpicks ideas of progress and explores the cognitive dissonance needed to be a human alive today.</li><li>Radhika Jani and Sumayyah Zannath of <a href="https://platformlondon.org/" title="https://platformlondon.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Platform London</a> and the <a href="https://justfact.co.uk/the-blueprint-architects/" title="https://justfact.co.uk/the-blueprint-architects/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Blueprint Architects</a>, who are using community arts to co-design a blueprint for food and racial justice in Tower Hamlets.</li><li>Eloïse Currie, circus artist and co-creator <a href="https://www.ofthewildritual.co.uk/" title="https://www.ofthewildritual.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Of The Wild</a> circus, a collective that intersects ecology, immersive performance and seasonal ritual.</li><li><a href="https://www.jamesaldridge-artist.co.uk/" title="https://www.jamesaldridge-artist.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">James Aldridge</a>, visual artist working with people and places, whose work in recent years has focused on artful engagement with wetlands, and on neurodivergent perspectives on place, through the Queer River research project.</li><li>Disabled sculptor <a href="https://www.lladykitt.com/" title="https://www.lladykitt.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lady Kitt</a> does ‘Mess Making As Social Glue’ - long term, collaborative projects driven by insatiable curiosity about how art can be useful, usually including the co-creation of large scale installations.</li></ul>
