Community Choices: Citizens In The Driving Seat

The Fire Starter Festival 2017 was a week long festival of collaborative learning events between 23 and 30 January, illuminating creative, disruptive and innovative ways in which we can all transform ourselves, our organisations and the wider system.The First Minister has provided a clear commitment to empowering individuals and communities to become involved in designing public services. Many people across Scotland are currently lighting their own small fires by exploring genuine, participatory methods of engagement, creating innovative and transformative changes.The Fire Starter Festival provides a unique opportunity to share the stories of these fires of change, as well as deepening our knowledge and skills that underpin transformation. It allows people from all aspects of public service to share innovative and creative ways that we are all making a difference to Scotland.Fire Starter Festival will be back 29 January to 9 February 2018.

Fire Starter Festival 2017

Participatory budgeting, better known within Scotland as Community Choices, has really taken off in the last two years, with over £2m distributed in 2015/16 alone. 90% of it into the most deprived communities. Community Choices involves local people in actively deciding how public money is spent, on the services that matter to them. Decisions on public transport, the environment, health and social care, housing and more. Increasingly public budgets are going to be decided through this innovative and engaging approach to a more participatory local democracy. At this practical seminar you will find out how Community Choices works in practice and how it is influencing Scotland’s public service reform agenda.
Especially relevant for anyone involved in policy making, public service reform and community empowerment, this free afternoon workshop in Glasgow is being run by PB Partners, the UK’s leading experts in participatory budgeting.
