Competitive Enterprise Education - Learn, Develop, Contribute! 

Catherine is a supported by a three year scholarship from Sheffield Business School, Sheffield Hallam University, to undertake a PhD programme of research, confirmed in October 2018 under the title: 'And the winner is...?' Exploring Competitive Enterprise Education.

This workshop provides an opportunity for those who deliver, promote, recommend or research Enterprise Education to develop their thinking and practice with regards to its most recognisable format! 
 And whilst my focus is on enterprise education that is competitive, the research has implications for educators who use competitive learning, or people and organisations who promote various social and educational agendas through the use of challenges and competitions. Wider than that, it can be related to the use of competitive pedagogy in classrooms – so can prompt thinking and development around educational practice more broadly as well as about this aspect of careers and enterprise provision.
 Enterprise Education is recommended at all levels of education and often has a familiar, competitive format where participants are organised in teams, respond to a challenge, present their results and there is judged to be a winner, or winners.
 Competitive Enterprise Education (any enterprise education activity which is structured to result in a winner or winners) is now widely promoted in policy and provided in practice. Policy recommendations generally assume that competitive activities will be motivating and develop skills, but a review illustrated that such approaches have potential to diminish motivation, decrease confidence and reproduce social disadvantage (Brentnall et al, 2018).  
 This workshop offers the opportunity to explore this topic, understand the assumed benefits and identify the potential flaws. Participating in the workshop will develop thinking, prompt ideas for practice and facilitate advice and contributions to a PhD study: ‘And the winner is? Exploring Competitive Enterprise Education.’
 The research programme aims to deepen understanding relating to Competitive Enterprise Education in order to improve programmes provided for young people and inform policy development. A series of interviews has been conducted with different stakeholders involved in the design, delivery, management and commissioning of Competitive Enterprise Education.
 Now this workshop offers those with an interest in enterprise education, its practice and policy, to learn more about the topic, challenge their thinking and contribute to the research programme. The research has ethical approval and information sheets will be sent out prior to the event.
 While the PhD research has focussed on secondary school practice, Competitive Enterprise Education is remarkably transferable, and the workshop is relevant to practitioners, providers and promotors of Competitive Enterprise Education and competitions and challenges in primary, further and higher education also.
The workshop will take place from 12.15 – 4pm on Friday July 5th and is being hosted at the Hallam iLab, Sheffield Hallam University’s new start-up hub. A networking lunch will be provided and a tour of the Hallam iLab. Please message the organiser with any specific dietary requirements.
