EVENT DESCRIPTION:
In this ongoing series on compositional structures, we’ll look at how the use of
windows in a selection of artists’ works allows them to physically and symbolically shed
light on their subjects and themes.
Windows in art – as in life – light our interior worlds and connect us with the world
outside. For centuries artists have used them as a framing device, to create a transition
between outer and inner environments and as powerful symbols of loneliness,
contemplation or revelation.
In this class, we’ll focus on a broad selection of paintings including works by Johannes Vermeer, Pierre Bonnard, Berthe Morisot and Henri Matissè that demonstrate how artists have used windows as both bold compositional elements and to play with and capture light.
Whether skillfully lighting domestic and interior subjects or providing perspectives on
outside realities, these artists use windows to illuminate; both literally and
metaphorically.
Under Lucy’s guidance you’ll spend time concentrating on capturing the light that
shapes these works by Vermeer, Friedrich, Hopper and more. We’ll have fun mimicking
the dynamism created from window light and the colours some of the artists have chosen to bring that sense of energy, sublimity and vitality to these humble subjects.
MATERIALS LIST:
● 5 sheets of paper
● coloured pencils and/or soft pastels
● an eraser, some tissue (for blending)
