Concurrent#2

Concurrent is a network of key researchers and leading improvisers to share approaches and theoretical insights, apply psychological understandings to collaborative performance and consider how performers share or construct meanings at the cutting edge of contemporary improvisation.

Concurrent - Research Network for Improvisation

Concurrent#2 will take place in January 2017! The second public event by Edinburgh College of Art’s research network for improvisation between disciplines follows on from Concurrent#1 in 2016, at which capacity audiences enjoyed an array of workshops exploring innovative ways for distinct improvisers to access each others’ practice and ground-breaking performances, documented on our Media page.
This year, activities get under way on Friday 13th January with talks from some of the collaborators on new work in progress, including Sophia Lycouris’ developing movement explorations of Edinburgh’s Botanic Gardens. Performances will follow integrating the sound world of the saxophone with live drawing and dance, including recent work by alto player Christian Ferlaino and new experimentation from Raymond MacDonald and Graeme Wilson with visual artist Emma Bowen (Garage gallery).
On Saturday 14th, daytime workshops will include on-going work to integrate the improvisation of dance and music therapists, using a performance between therapists and non-therapists to query how performative expectations shape improvising. Adam Linson (University of Edinburgh) will discuss improvisation as a characteristic of documentary film-making, while a talk from Tara French (Glasgow School of Art) will compare how participants in singing and dancing workshops perceived barriers and opportunities presented by improvising. Peter Wiegold (Brunel University/Club Inegales) will work with dancers and musicians on a system of conduction to encompass both disciplines. 
Performances in the evening of Saturday 14th will include the culmination of Peter Wiegold’s workshop, and new experimentation with strategies for cross-disciplinary improvising groups directed by Graeme Wilson & Raymond MacDonald. Saxophonist Franziska Schroeder (Sonic Arts Research Centre, Queens University Belfast) will perform with visual artists in an emerging electro-acoustic collaboration with ECA’s own Jules Rawlinson.

An improvised performance between musicians and music therapists will be discussed in terms of clinical vs performative improvising, and the ecology of encounters in public space. Further performance with dance/movement therapists will move the discussion on to shared understanding in movement and sound: musical responses to ‘other’, external and internal sound experiences in performance, and creating narrative in the moment.

<LI>Stepping out of your comfort zone: creating the conditions for improvisation Workshop Tara French & Ana Almeida</LI>
</UL>
Participation in improvisation provides the opportunity for a positive impact on wellbeing through a range of social and emotional benefits. However, a number of perceived barriers may prevent people from experiencing the benefits of improvisation. Building on last year’s session on perceived barriers to improvising with voice or dance, this workshop will explore with the audience how we can overcome reluctance to move or sing spontaneously. Audience members will be invited to take part in short vocal and movement improvisations.

In an unprecedented interaction, these two improvisers will contest boundaries between computer technology and embodied musical performance.

</UL>
Peter Wiegold often uses signals in his musical performances that give spontaneous simple frames/roles for the performers. Involving repetition, soloing, background/foreground, copying etc. To work somewhere between free improvisation and fixed scored elements. In this workshop he will take further explorations he began with dancers/choreographers last year where the same set of signals are shared in performance by an invited group of dancers and musicians.

The saxophonist’s materials become the basis for the visual and sonic manipulations of the other artists. Realtime signal processing extends and augments the ecosystem of saxophonist, saxophone and the concert hall.
