Conducting Masterclass

Calling aspiring conductors, aged 14-25!

Open to all but we particularly welcome applications from women and non-binary young people

Date: Saturday 4 May, from 10am

Location: Shepherd Group Brass Band rehearsal space, York

We are co-hosting a conducting masterclass with Brass Bands England led by Katrina Marzella on Saturday 4 May. This masterclass is designed to support aspiring, conductors in an encouraging, inspiring environment.

Develop your conducting technique and skills with expert guidance through the day, led by Katrina Marzella and then practice those skills in situ with all women brass ensemble, Femmes Fortissimo.

We encourage applications from 14-25 year olds, particularly those who are women or non-binary, who wish to develop conducting and leadership skills. This masterclass is part of our work to diversify the banding sector, and we recognise conducting as an area with significantly less women than men operating in this space.

You do not need to have significant experience in conducting to attend. Enthusiasm and commitment to developing musical leadership skills is more important than already having an advanced skillset.

There will be two ways to experience the day:

Generators will:

Be assigned 1-2 pieces of selected music to conduct in advance of the day

Have 20+ minutes time working with the mighty Femmes Fortissimo!

Receive bespoke and tailored instruction from Katrina during this session

Receive a guidance note from Katrina after its conclusion

View all other sessions from a raised platform

Will be actively involved in feedback to the other Generators (peer to peer feedback)

Take Up The Baton! participants will:

Be involved as a conductor in the warm-up and discussion session

Are warmly invited to participate in the Take Up the Baton Speed session for 5 minutes with Femmes Fortissimo

Have the option to stay and observe the afternoon session with Generators (please indicate if you wish to stay past 12.30pm)

Please email abby@amp-music.co.uk to join the waiting list for the Generators session.

To attend, please book a place on either Generators or Take Up The Baton by selecting the ticket you wish to book through this eventbrite. You need to sign up by Friday 26 April at 5pm.
