Sshhh – Confidentiality issues for language professionals

The duty of confidentiality applies to us all. So what do our professional Codes of Conduct tell us about it, when exactly does it apply, in which work venues and settings and how long does this duty last for?

Sue will consider these questions in an interactive session where she invites you to participate with any queries you might have such as:

• Many of us subcontract work - are we breaching the client's confidentiality when we do this?
• Is it ok to work on our laptops in Starbucks, Costa and so on?
• Should we sign clients' NDAs which ask us to destroy our work on completion of the job?

Speaker bio

Sue Leschen is a lawyer-linguist based in Manchester UK. She is the Director of Advocate a niche market legal and commercial French interpreting and translation services company. She is herself a hands-on interpreter and translator. Sue is also an independent trainer and delivers talks and workshops on legal terminology and issues of professional interest to language professionals. She also (increasingly) acts as a one to one business mentor to fellow language professionals who are either setting up or looking to revamp existing freelance businesses. Sue sits on the Professional Conduct Committees of ITI, NRPSI and RBSLI as well as on CIOL's Council. She supports the need for properly qualified, security vetted, experienced and insured language professionals.

Those willing to join us for lunch at the Queen’s Hotel are more than welcome to do so. Please note that while attendance at the afternoon session is free, individuals are required to pay for their own lunch.
