Connect One UK

Online conference for people with Type 1 Diabetes, developed by people living with Type 1 Diabetes.All sessions include people with T1 diabetes and occasionally a healthcare professional. Whether you are new to the mysteries of managing Type 1, experienced at the roller coaster that living with Type 1 often gives us, or a parent of a child or young person with diabetes there should be something here for you!  Healthcare professionals might also gain some useful professional insights and are very welcome.The conference is happening in the year where we celebrate 100 years since the discovery of insulin and 99 years (11th January 1922) that the first dose was administered to Leonard Thompson, a 14-year-old boy with diabetes, who lay dying at the Toronto General Hospital.We are eternally grateful to those scientists and patients who made our lives today possible.

Connect One UK is a two half  day conference with the first session on Sunday morning and the second session on Monday evening.

Conference ProgrammeEveryone involved in this conference either lives with type one diabetes or cares for and supports people living with type one diabetes. From people leading instagram communities to sports stars, exploring mental health issues to the latest in diabetes tech, there is a packed and varied agenda. We hope, something for everyone in our community! Here is what the programme has in store!DAY ONESunday 18th April10.00	Conference opensA welcome and introduction from Alex Silverstein, Professor Partha Kar and Jazz Sethi10.15 	The power of communityThis session will be explore the power of community in the context of living with Type 1 diabetes. We have a brilliant panel of offline and online community leaders using tools such as facebook, twitter, instagram and offline volunteer approaches. We will cover the pros and cons of joining the DOC (diabetes online communities) and offline communities, delve into the power of peer support and explore how the DOC has broken down barriers including between professionals and patients. We will also look at the impact of the Covid19 pandemic and offline communities.Chaired by Roz Davies. The Panel includes Mandy WIlkinson, Adrienne Burton, Jules Barcroft, Dan Newman and Andy Broomhead 11.00 Comfort Break11.15 	Things we don’t always talk about – Diabetes and Mental HealthManaging type 1 diabetes is really hard and there are many aspects of living with it that we don’t often get to talk about. In this session we will hear and share real stories of young people living with type 1 and their journeys and challenges along the way.Chaired by Maddie Julian. The Panel includes Rose Stewart and young people and parents. 12.00 Comfort Break12.15 	Finding your resilience with diabetes- A walk in the park or a mountain to climb?During this session we explore the role and importance of resilience in daily diabetes management and physical activity, as we hear from 3 speakers from the world of exercise, sport and psychology talk about their thoughts and experiences of discovering resilience and using it to overcome type 1 diabetes barriers.Chaired by Roddy Riddle. The Panel includes Alex Richards, Muhammed Ali, Hannah McCook and Martin Berkley13.00 Launch of the consultation ‘‘T1 experiences – shaping inpatient care’Type 1 experiences about their hospital stays are very mixed. You now have a magic wand…… what would diabetes care and support look like if you or your loved one was in hospital? Join us in an online consultation where we explore what we think diabetes in-patient care should look like.Led by Fiona Martin 13.30 Day one conference ends DAY TWOMonday 19th April18.00		Conference opensBack to the future: The changing landscape of diabetes care chaired by Dan Newman18.00 		1st Panel discussion:Lis Warren and Pete Davies, two medallists (people who have lived with diabetes for more than 50 years) will share advice and answer questions about how to live each day to the full with type 1 diabetes and how they have kept positive expectations of the future. 18.30 	2nd Panel discussion:Professor Partha Kar, Dr May Ng and Dr Emma Wilmot discuss developments in type 1 diabetes care technology and research which are coming thick and fast now. Our three speakers will each share their own experience and views of what is on the horizon for type 1 diabetes care before answering your questions.19.15 Comfort Break19.30 	Tech Talk - from Libre to Looping!There are so many different technologies out there now and sometimes it can be confusing and frankly scary! Hear from a range of people’s experiences with technology at different life stages.Chaired by Jules Barcroft.
