Conserving condoms: the challenges of preserving modern archives
Wed 21 September 2016, 12:30 – 13:00 BST
Enhance, Access and Understand: The University of Edinburgh and the Wellcome Trust is an exhibition and series of six lunch time talks celebrating the recent Wellcome Trust Research Resources funded projects undertaken at the Centre for Research Collections. This funding has made possible the cataloguing, conservation and care of collections for the benefit of public access.
Conserving condoms: the challenges of preserving modern archives (talk 4 of 6)
Ruth Honeybone, Lothian Health Services Archive Manager and Emily Hick, University of Edinburgh Special Collections Conservator
In 2014 Lothian Health Services Archive was awarded funding to conserve and catalogue their UNESCO recognised HIV/AIDS collections. This talk will explore the preservation challenges presented by modern archive collections, with a focus on plastic ephemera that now holds historical significance, and the solutions found.
The talk will be illustrated by examples of the innovative conservation techniques that have been developed and a behind the scenes tour of the conservation studio in the Centre for Research Collections.
