Kielder: A Planned Wilderness
Speaker's Abstract
There is little of England that can be said has been purely created by nature. Almost all of our landscape has been moulded by human intervention to a greater or lesser extent and while this has mostly happened over periods measured in centuries, at Kielder in Northumberland, an entire alternative rural landscape covering 250 square miles has been ‘created’ on an industrial scale in 60 years.
Recently Kielder has developed as a visitor destination – ‘Kielder Water & Forest Park’, countering a decline in job opportunities associated with farming and forestry. Tourism operators have developed ways to attract people to visit the area such as walking, cycling, ecology, fishing - and astronomy, as Kielder Water & Forest Park and the adjoining Northumberland National Park joined forces to become an internationally recognised Dark Sky Park.
This talk will be about how artists and architects have responded to the challenge of making work for this spacious and sometimes harsh landscape. There is much material to draw upon in an environment with a rich history, unique communities, extremes of weather and contradictions in current occupation. A place that, despite the appearance of wilderness, has been and continues to be planned more comprehensively, in finer detail and further into the future than most of our urban landscape. 
Speaker's biography
Peter Sharpe is a freelance art and architecture curator and also Director of the highly regarded Kielder Art & Architecture programme working closely with emerging and established artists and architects as they develop built responses to the dramatic location of the Kielder Forest & Water Park in Northumberland. 
He is also arts advisor to Northumberland National Park’s creative programme and associate of Arts&Heritage working on architecturally focused projects such as The Mansio (2015). His work with Newcastle University School of Architecture has centred on the development of Testing Ground, an on-going commissioning programme enabling MArch students to design and build projects in remote rural areas of Northumberland. 
Peter Sharpe was awarded RIBA Client of the Year for his work with Kielder Art & Architecture in 2009.
