Brighton Chamber has lots of brilliant events on offer each month. Events are at the heart of Brighton Chamber. Our varied programme offers first-class opportunities for connecting and learning both in-person (when it’s safe to do so again) and at the moment - virtually. We offer Learning, networking and topical events.If you have never been a member of the Chamber you can book and join as a guest at two of our events (just one Chamber Breakfast). After this, you will need to join the Chamber to enjoy the benefits of membership.

Construction Voice: Why aren’t people choosing construction as a career?At this first Construction Voice event of 2024, we‘ll be asking what’s coming down the line for the construction, development and property sectors when there seems to be a lack of young people choosing these jobs as careers.Universities and colleges are offering new ways to study like degree apprenticeships, but is this enough to turn the tide? Employers are looking at how to attract and welcome a more diverse workforce – but is this too little too late?Businesses within the construction sector talk about difficulties in recruiting and retaining talent, even though pay has increased (in order to compete), and working conditions are more flexible than ever.In 2021 there was a study published that indicated ethnic minorities are 16 percent more likely to leave the engineering and construction industry than their white peers. And the same study found that 1 in 10 women aged 20-34 will leave the industry to work elsewhere each year.Other factors are compounding the situation including the legislation changes preventing migrant workers to work easily on UK construction sites and the increase in the minimum salary for workers to come from abroad, coupled with a high number of the industry entering retirement age in this decade.Other sectors can be seen as more innovative, high-tech, demographically balanced and socially impactful. That said, those of in the construction sector know that good opportunities exist. Despite recent focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, women still only make up 16% of the workforce and ethnic minorities only 10%.Do we need to change negative perceptions or is it more fundamental than that? Do lot more attractive to recruit and retain the next generation of talent.Our panel will discuss what’s stopping us attracting people, and what needs to happen to turn the tide.
