Contested Inheritances, 1750-1830

A one-day conference hosted by the <A HREF="https://www.york.ac.uk/eighteenth-century-studies/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies</A> and supported by the <A HREF="http://wrocah.ac.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities</A> & the <A HREF="http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Arts and Humanities Research Council</A>.
Contested Inheritances sets out to explore the plurality of historical representations and the contestation surrounding interpretations of national pasts. Focusing on Britain in the long eighteenth century, the topics we hope to explore on this day will include:
· Antiquarianism and related modes of interpreting the past · Allegorical representations of British history to critique and transform the eighteenth century present and its national institutions · Ways in which the past was made accessible and entertaining to contemporary eighteenth-century audiences In particular, we are interested in exploring how contested interpretations of the past were deployed by creative thinkers experimenting with constitutive elements of national identity.

Professor Heather O'Donoghue (University of Oxford) - 'Coleridge, the Cottles and a New Take on Old Norse' 
David Barrow (University of York) - 'King Alfred and 'Rule Britannia': The 1773 'Revival' of Alfred: a Masque'
Dr Deborah Russell (University of York - 'Genealogies of Suffering: Mary Queen of Scots and Women's Gothic'
Dr Jim Watt (University of York) - 'Britain's War in America and the Gothic Turn' 
Lauren Nixon (University of Sheffield) - 'Our Ancient Glories: The Gothic and Chivalry in Eighteenth-Century Military Masculinity' 
Hamish Mathison (University of Sheffield) - ‘Simile and Death: How to Read Scottish Poems in the Age of Enlightenment’
Dr Rob Gossedge (University of Cardiff) - ''Oh the Glorious Installation': David's Garrick's Installation of the Garter and the Installation of 1771'
