Course Content

(African Theology Unit – open to African and non- African participants as well as World Indigenous communities’ non-African participants).

This unit introduces colonisation and decolonisation through the lens of African theologians, the African Church in Africa and in the diaspora, and global African theories, philosophies, and experiences. The unit interrogate settler colonialism and the ways in which people participate in the process of settler colonialism wittingly and /or unwittingly. It will examine a wide range of past and contemporary issues emerging from settler colonisation and the ways in which Africans in Africa and the diaspora can be resilient and resistant, self-determine, and revitalise an African cosmology. Areas of concern for African communities include— education, research, wage labour, African identity, gendered and sexual violence, animals, environmental racism, tribal enrolment, environmental racism, resource extraction and pollution, and African decolonizing methodologies. Through the readings and readings, lectures, assignments, discussions and assessments, we will explore some small and large scale and community-based instances of colonisation and decolonisation. This unit concludes by investigating colonialism in postmodernity in Africa and of Africans in the diaspora and how to navigate around it.
